Breath management strategies

Do some singers’ and wind players’ breath management strategies impact on their physical health?

Phase 1 of this two part study will examine whether, as the literature suggests, student singers and wind players experience a higher incidence of adverse physical conditions related to breath management than the general student population. Singers and wind players develop breath management strategies and techniques that employ high abdominal pressure which can lead to a range of potentially debilitating and, possibly, serious conditions. Through an online survey sent to all students in participating conservatoires, comparisons will be made between student singers and wind players, and the global student population. In addition to general and demographic information regarding each participant, the survey questions are designed to elicit information on a range of symptoms and conditions that could indicate either functional abnormalities or, indeed, positive health outcomes.
